Big spiders kill little spiders with fear

For most of us, scared to death is just a piddly phrase. But for small, inferior wolf spiders, being scared to death means dying. As in dead.

Big wolf spiders eat littler ones. Now it turns out even the thought of bullies can drive the poor guys to starvation, weight loss, and ultimately, death.

Even though they live on the ground, wolf spiders spin webs. Naturally, that struck scientists as odd.

Recently researchers discovered the wolf spider webs are doused in chemicals. These chemicals can tell fellow spiders what the spinner had for lunch that day, and when it ate last.

The hungrier the big guy, the more likely Little One is going to be the next meal.

These cues strike fear into Little One so strong that he loses his appetite and starves.

To death.
