Just how close is your neighborhood power plant? How many kilowatts of energy is it producing? And how much carbon dioxide does that eyesore emit into the air?
Answer these questions and find out more fun and frightening facts about 50,000 plants worldwide at CARMA.org, Carbon Monitoring for Action. The newly unveiled site is hosted by the think tank, the Center for Global Development.
With user-friendly colorful icons, the maps help pinpoint where 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide are annually released into the atmosphere.
An intense number of plants marked with a "Red Alert" status cover the map like a bad case of acne.
Many of these power plants and their stats aren't pretty.
The world's five biggest power producing plants are in Brazil, China, Venezuela, Japan, and South Korea, according to the site. Other interesting tidbits include: Australians produce more tons of CO2 per person than anywhere else in the world. China's Huaneng Power International takes the gold medal in pollution, releasing nearly 292 million tons of CO2 annually.
CARMA's objective points out that public information disclosure has successfully reduced traditional pollutants. With the site, CARMA hopes the big red spots will get dirty power companies to clean up their act.
