BigThink sells itself as "YouTube for smart people," and they've collected 2,000 interviews from luminaries in politics, business, media, pop culture and science. Instead of a willy-nilly, user-uploaded content format, BigThink instead asks these Illuminati important questions and videotapes their answers against a stark white background. It's sort of like Errol Morris, but in a doctor's office and less engaging.
While the science side of the site seems kind of spare and sterile, they at least make an effort to include vids from people like Stephen Pinker, NIH bioethicist Ezekiel Emmanuel and Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia.
The site's founders claim to be ready to upload hundreds more complete edited videos in the near future, and with backers like former Harvard president Larry Summers, entrepreneur Tom Scott from Nantucket Nectars and Plum TV, and TV producer Gary David Goldberg of Spin City and Family Ties, it's probably not going anywhere.
I'll leave it to you all to hash out whether BigThink is really on its way to becoming YouTube for brainiacs. What do you say -- a welcome dab of intelligence for on-demand web video, or simply YouTube's boring little brother?
Personally, I'm not convinced of its science value. I'd rather get my science from a blithering boob, like this guy:
