UPDATE: Magic Fireballs may make you a wizard, but more likely to burn you

89019_hair-on-fire.jpg If you'll recall, we recently posted a video which claimed to show you how to make magical burning fireballs.

A rash of comments have been posted both on the original Metacafe page and other host sites like Boing Boing, claiming this is a either a) a hoax, or b) very difficult to pull off without seriously injuring yourself.

Since the video tricks involved to make it a fake would be considerably high-budget, the general consensus is that it isn't a hoax. But selecting the proper material and fuel might be integral to your success, and not knowing exactly how to combine them could result in a horrible disaster anyway.

From what we can glean from the drooling rabble, it might not be a hoax, but playing with fire and lighter fluid is apt to get most fools burned. It's probably wise to keep this trick out of the kitchen and leave this one to the professionals...professional idiots.

Radio Matty says:

I tried this with some help from a friend of mine. It's pretty much like a wick from a Zippo-style lighter balled up in the palm of your hand. The lighter fuel burns- not your hand- and as long as you keep the ball moving around constantly it doesn't get too hot to hold. It makes great sounds when you pass it to someone standing nearby as well. We made two of them. I'd like to make a third so I can juggle them.
Note: we did undertake this particular endeavour OUTDOORS and standing on a NON-FLAMMABLE asphalt driveway. Be sure to keep the fireball away from dried leaves or other flammable hazards. And HAVE FUN!!!
