That hole your gazing at to the left isn't just any lame, B&W cave; it's a sinkhole on freaking Mars. It reminds us that Mars is more than a dot in the sky and a place to send people in 75 years — it's a real, live place with rocks, tunnels and maybe even signs of former life. Bad Astronomy collects their Top Ten Astronomy Pictures of 2007, and they all inspire the same sense of wonder and reveal new things as well. Kinda whets your appetite for next year's crop of sick astronomy photos.
Other photos include Comet Holmes swelling larger than the sun, Io and Europa captured in the same shot, light bent by dark matter, and chaos in the Vela supernova. They're all gorgeous, and all inspiring. Check out two more after the jump.

The end of the year means tons of semi-pointless year-end lists, and TIME Magazine chimes in with a slightly more useful "Top 10 Scientific Discoveries" list. #1 goes to the stem cell breakthroughs of the year, including the researchers who reprogrammed skin cells to behave like stem cells. WIRED coverboy J. Craig Venter had to settle for #2 for his mapping of the human genome. Don't worry, though Craigger -- there's always next year.
Other big winners this year on TIME's list included the brightest supernova recorded (#3), hundreds of new species discovered (#4), and research toward growing a human heart valve.

Earlier this week, the BBC's environmental correspondent Richard Black wrote a piece summarizing the top 10 arguments made by climate change skeptics as to the significance or reality of global warming. Black, who has been covering climate change for at least a decade, offers counter arguments.
To my reading, it's a first-of-its-kind distillation that presents the current state of the discussion. As Black notes, what the skeptical arguments share is the sentiment of a non-response to data indicating unequivocal warming.
